Computers 4 US, Inc. is dedicated to the tasks of bringing together people, ideas, and capital for:
1. Providing access to computers to the less fortunate families with children of Wake County and the surrounding area.
2. Providing basic training on personal computers to the less fortunate families and their children
3. Re-cycle older computers from various governmental, non-governmental, and private sector sources.
4. To be able to supply personal computers and computer related training to those that can least afford the technology – but who also need it the most.
Computers 4 US was founded on a simple idea - that technology should be available to those people in our society that can least afford technology - yet need it the most.
Darryl Hammill the President and Founder of Computers 4 US could be called an early adopter. He was online, via CompUserve before the words Internet and World Wide Web existed. Cruising along with an Commodore 64, tape drive, and 300 baud modem he utilized this technology to transmit sales orders to Chicago.
Years later he turned his hobby and passion for technology into his career. He worked for the State of North Carolina's Department of Health and Human Services as the Information Systems Administrator for Office of Citizen Services. During his tenure at DHHS he discovered that more and more of their services were offered online. That's wonderful if you have access to a computer.
The people needing the technology were the least that can afford it. Yet, they were the ones needing the very information being posted the Internet.
Utilizing the plethora of surplus computers, software from New Deal Software, and free internet through Net Zero, Computers 4 US donates computers - fully configured for the Internet - to families with children and elderly citizens (in rural areas). If training is needed, arrangements have been made with the Community Outreach Program through the Community College network.
